By telling this story, Jesus took this lawyer out of the synagogue and put him down on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho, a road the lawyer knew to be so dangerous and infested with robbers that he would never have traveled it himself. Jesus showed the lawyer the mutilated body of a traveler lying there by the side of the road, and then He asked him again, “Who is your neighbor?” To the lawyer, he was just a name to study.
